This one is coming together nicely. We're mid-build on a large deck and pergola combo in Midlothian, and the framing stage is where you really start to see the scale of what's being built. The deck platform stretches wide across the back of the home, and the pergola posts are already standing tall and braced into position.
The framing is the foundation of everything. Get it wrong here, and nothing else matters. We use pressure-treated lumber throughout the substructure - the kind of material that holds up against ground moisture, shifting soil, and years of Texas weather. Every joist is set with the finished surface in mind, so the decking boards will lay flat and true when it's time.
The pergola posts are what a lot of homeowners underestimate. They need to be anchored properly, plumb, and built to carry real load - especially if you're planning to add a shade structure, string lights, or any kind of overhead covering down the road. We brace everything during the build to keep it locked in while the rest of the structure goes up around it.
What we love about a project like this is how much it extends the usable space of a home. The existing covered patio on this house is already a great outdoor area. This deck and pergola build pushes that living space further into the yard, giving the homeowner more room to spread out, entertain, and actually use their backyard the way it was meant to be used.
There's still more work to do on this one, and we're looking forward to showing the finished product. But even at this stage, you can already see the bones of something built to last.
